<li>29 is played with four players, split into teams of two, with partners sitting opposite each other.</li>
<li>A Short Deck of 32 cards from a standard 52-card pack is used.</li>
<li>The deck includes eight cards in each of the four suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades.</li>
<li>The cards are ranked as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7, from highest to lowest within each suit.</li>
</ul>

In this game, the objective is to win tricks that contain valuable cards. Points are awarded based on the following card values:

<li>Jacks: 3 points each</li>
<li>Nines: 2 points each</li>
<li>Aces: 1 point each</li>
<li>Tens: 1 point each</li>
<li>Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7) have no points value</li>
</ul>

This brings the total number of points in the game to 28. In some variations, the last trick is worth an additional point, making a total of 29 – hence the name of the game. While many players nowadays do not count the point for the last trick, the game is still referred to as 29, even when played without this additional point.

In traditional gameplay, the discarded Two, Three, Four, and Five cards from a standard deck are used as trump indicators. Each player takes a set of these cards, one from each suit. Additionally, Sixes are used for scorekeeping, with each partnership using one red and one black Six for this purpose.
